![]() Sakura Hill Encore xx (Staging Post XX x Belmez XX) More Pictures | A charming addition to our little band of 2009, bringing some topnotch imported European Thoroughbred blood to the mix. With bloodlines like this, Corey should make a fine eventer or jumper prospect. ![]() ![]() Belmez, sire of Belle's dam Sakura Hill Belmopan xx, himself won the 1990 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He is by the great El Senor and is himself a good broodmare sire. The famous sire Quorum requires no introduction as the sire of Red Rum, the horse that won the Grand National at Aintree an unparalled THREE times, in 1973, 1974, and 1977. The mare Primera appears twice and is by the famed sporthorse producer My Babu, who was a grandson of Lavendula, female family 1. Top Ville is one of the best sires for steeplchasers ever and Val de Loire was used a great deal in Selle francais jumper breeding. His sire, Vieux Manoir, was one of the major foundation TBs in Selle francais jumper breeding. Pearl Cap, Elf, Battleship- all are famous contributors to jumper breeding and to the pedigrees of major winners in steeplechasing. These bloodlines can all be found in the many great sport horses of the USET in its glory days. El Gran Senor (1981-2006), sire of Belmez xx was an American-bred Thoroughbred race horse, foaled at Windfields Farm in Maryland. An outstanding two-year-old who went on to win European classics over a mile and over 12 furlongs, El Gran Senor received a Timeform rated 136. He also enjoyed notable success at stud, had been pensioned at Ashford Stud in Kentucky since 2000, and was 25 years old when he died on October 18, 2006. Throughout his entire stud career El Gran Senor had low fertility and typically sired no more that 40 foals in any year - these days most top sires and champions sire between 60 and 180 foals in a year. Over the course of his career he fathered less than 400 foals. There were only 14 in his first foal-crop but they included Al Hareb who won the Racing Post Trophy (Gr1) over a mile in England. Al Hareb is at stud in Australia and while his overall record is unremarkable, he did sire the top class sprinter Hareeba, a multiple Group 1 winning sprinter. El Gran Senor sired a total of 12 horses who won at the highest level - Group/Grade 1. These included South African classic winner Kundalini, top American fillies Corrazona, Spanish Fern and Toussaud, Breeders' Cup Sprint hero Lit de Justice, and multiple European Group 1 winner Rodrigo de Triano. He was pensioned from stallion duty at the age of 19 but his tally of 55 stakes winners represented a rate of more than 14% stakes winners to foals born - 10%+ is the usually accepted sign of a good very good stallion. His record as a sire of successful stallions has been disappointing. As a broodmare sire (maternal grandfather), however, he had done very well. His top class filly Toussaud is one of the most valuable mares in the world and she is one of a tiny handful of mares who have ever produced as many as four Group/Grade 1 winners. Her son Chester House (by Mr Prospector) won the Arlington Million (Gr1). Her daughter Honest Lady (by Seattle Slew) won the Santa Monica Handicap (Gr1). Another son, Chiselling (by Woodman) won the Secretariat Stakes (Gr1) before taking up stallion duties in South Africa. Her fourth Grade 1 winner is classic winner Empire Maker (by Unbridled). He is at his owner-breeders' Juddmonte Farm in Kentucky and his first progeny will race as two-year-olds in 2007. Many of them were sold for in excess of US$100,000 as a yearling.
